SPAIN and France are the most popular destinations for expats, but a study by Currencies Direct, a foreign-exchange trader, says Cyprus is a better bet if you want good weather, a relaxed lifestyle, lower taxes and cheaper cost of living, writes David Budworth.

SPAIN and France are the most popular destinations for expats, but a study by Currencies Direct, a foreign-exchange trader, says Cyprus is a better bet if you want good weather, a relaxed lifestyle, lower taxes and cheaper cost of living, writes David Budworth.

Its managing director, Neil Redcliffe, said: "Properties are often cheaper in Cyprus than in many of the popular areas of Spain or France, and its historical links with Britain mean that many people speak English."

The island is four hours away from London by plane and has more than 300 days' sunshine a year. and it is relatively easy to buy a house and set up a business there.

The Greek half of the island joined the EU in 2004, so you can work there without a work permit. However, if you intend to work more than three months you will require a residence permit costing five Cypriot pounds.
