
Cyprus is a member of the United Nations, the Council of
Europe, the British Commonwealth and also a member of
the Non-Aligned Movement.
In May 2004 Cyprus was accepted as a full member of the
European Union.
The majority of elementary and secondary schools are state
owned. However, there is a thriving private sector in education
offering specialized courses leading to UK or USA external
degrees or professional examinations.
Paphos town has the International school and the American
Academy.
International statistics show Cyprus ranking third after
USA and Canada in terms of university degrees per capita.
Illiteracy is almost non-existent. Special schools offer
courses for the needs of foreign speaking pupils in English,
French, Russian, German and Arabic.
